52nd Street: A Tradition
by Burt Korall
...From 1942 until The Street
was no more, Scott was on hand, "attending school."
"The older musicians were interested in the younger cats in those days,"
Scott told me. "Ben Webster, my musical father, took me in hand, watched
over me, and showed me things.
On his suggestion, I went from club to club to hear what all the other
musicians had to say, sitting in where and when I could. "It was like
school; the older fellows realized that you were just coming up and allowed
for mistakes. If you were trying, that was all that counted.
"When I first started coming to The Street, Hawkins and Don Byas, Garner,
'Lady' (Billie Holiday), the King Cole Trio and Joe Marsala were on the
scene. Roy Eldridge, Ben, Sid Catlett and Tatum soon became part of things.
Later, 'Bird' and Dizzy moved in. There was something for every type of
jazz musician and fun." Since The Street went burlesque and jazz moved
to Broadway, the East Side and Greenwich Village, taking with it little
of the "spirit" that made 52nd Street unique, Scott has developed into
a musician of stature. What he found basic to jazz on The Street - the
pulse, awareness of beginnings, - essential jazz materials (for example,
the blues) and above all, articulation of feelings - have remained fundamental
to all his work.
Says Scott: "Bird, Ben, all the 'great ones', never lost sight of where
jazz was from, what it consists of. And they gave, indeed, are still giving
to jazz. This album is dedicated to men of this kind. They helped me when
I was finding my way".
Plans for this album were finalized, the third evening at Newport.
Upon arrival back in New York, men who had worked on The Street were looked
up affiliations with other record companies, unavailability at the time
of record dates, among other things, prohibited the appearance of some
people that should have been part of this venture.
However, Scott managed to procure the services of some of the more significant
figures of the 52nd Street era plus some of the better musicians that
came along later on - a cross-section of "blowers": the traditional, the
modern, and those who stand astride of the two stylistic poles. Repertoire,
too, is a matter of variety, reflecting the schools of thought particular
to The Street at one time or another. The format for this album is the
jam session. "Head" arrangements were made on some of the tunes, but as
Tony Scott says, "letting the guys blow and tell their stories as they
did in the days of The Street was the object of it all."
