Blindfold test with Albert Nicholas (from a French Jazz-monthly of few
years ago)
records played:
1) - Buddy DeFranco:When
Your Lover Has Gone
2) - Tony Scott: A Shoulder to Cry on
Buddy DeFranco: When your Lover Has Gone
I like his way, his conception (speaking of Jean
Tordo). But I think that the clarinet here is Tony Scott. I like him a
lot. For me it's modern, yet it's music. the phrasing is very nice. This
player is in control of the high and of the low notes: he is perfectly
master of his instrument. Four stars for the clarinet-player.
Tony Scott: A Shoulder to Cry On (with Evans,
Hinton, Motian)
This is one of the most beautiful modern sounds
that I have ever heard. I have never heard something like it. The clarinet
player is extraordinary. It's perhaps Buddy DeFranco, but frankly, I don't
really know. No idea. the piano is very, very good. the clarinet-player
makes things which you don't hear every day, and what he makes is very
difficult: he is master of the instrument. Whoever this is: five stars!
