On a steamship in 1982 there was young girl whose name was Lena Gangi.
Her mother's name is Rose Gangi. Her father's name is Anthony Gangi My
father name is Joseph Sciacca. He came to America in 1904 on the Sicilian
prince. His mother's name is Augusta Sciacca. He came to America in 1904
on the Sicilian Prince. His father's name is Nicholas Sciacca. My father's
trade in a barber. He started his trade when he was ten years old. I was
born June 17, 1921 on the day they celebrate as the Battle of Bunker Hill.
My parents are Italians.
When I was six years old I went for a vacation to Italy.
We started from New York City on Jun 19, 1927 on the boat Colombo. When
my brother and I were waiting for our parents to come back for us on the
pier I thought they wouldn't come back for us and I thought they might
have got lost and I was scared but finally they came back ready to start.
We lost sight of land about three hour after.
We saw plenty of fish in the front of the boat they were by the hundreds.
They seemed to lead the skip. We boy used to have fun watching the curious
things the fish do. We also played tag and hide and seek or making pigtails
out of the rape. We had a very nice trip even though I did get seasick
once in a while. We passed the strait of Gibraltar and saw the Rock Fort
which England owns. We finally reached Italy at the city Palermo at about
4pm. o'clock June 30,1927. Beside the boat there were some Italian boys
swimming with only trunks on if people throw money in the water they will
get it and hold it in their mouth.
We finally got in a gondola and want ashore.
We went to Firenze Hotel. Then we started for Salemi where my father and
mother were born.
We stayed there a while and then started for Spagnolo which my uncle owns
a farm in. He has one horse one mule and one little baby horse. I liked
it there because there were horses and I rode them to their stable. We
stayed a while in Spagnolo also a little worry in that little while it
was this.
The army tried to put my father in the army but my father had something
the matter with his kidney and so he proved by going to a doctor and so
they didn't put him in the army. From Spagnolo we went to country place
where one of my cousins lived. In the back of the house my brother and
I carved our initials out of a sand-stone.
When you wanted water you would go down a long path and come to a big
spring.
There once was a dog that was lead near the path and it stunk awfully
so the people around burned it up. We left there and went back to Salemi
and Spagnolo a couple of times.
We stayed there for about three months. We started for America in Sept.9,1927.
Coming we saw a big turtle and also a sailboat. I thought it was a toy
boat it looked so small.
We arrived in New York Sep.20,1927 we were happy to be back in old sweet
small home.
Now I shall tell you about my hobbies. My best hobbies are reading books
especially thrilling adventurous stories. The best books I've read are
the Tom Swept series by Appleton. Also Larry Dexter series, or maybe you
would like some horse stories like ' Steeldust' or 'Black Beauty'. I presume
you've read it. I think horse stories are good because they're usually
about cowboys
I also like to make model airplanes and boats and shields and swords..
I also have pets. I had a little while kitten named Snowball and also
a little alligator from Florida.
I also had a poppy named tip-tap. He died an unexpected death. I also
had a various lot of kittens and some dogs. I have a dog now named ' Snooky'.
He has a little scotch terrier in him. He is about half fool high and
he is a year old. I also have nineteen goldfish which we have a little
pool in the back yard for. We now have them in a big fish bowl in the
house. At the age of four I started school.
I started in the kindergarden at the Mills St. School. My teacher's name
was Mrs. Ironmonger. She was a very nice teacher. I then I passed to first
grades and had Mrs. Ross there. I then passed to third and had Miss Meskill.
I then passed to fourth grade and had Miss Hart but while in teaching
fourth grade she got married and her name is now Mrs. Prince. I then changed
schools and went to Maple Ave. school to fifth grade. I then had Miss.
Marazzo. I passed to sixth grade and I have Mr. Johnson for session room
teacher also arithmetic teacher. I have Miss Oliver for English Miss Ross
