Program Notes by Al 'Jazzbo' Collins
Ears are possibly the most important jazz instrument ever in use. Without
them, the band would be incomplete, the ensemble un-formed and the jazz
world in-active and functionless. with them, it is appreciates measured,
applauded, enjoyed-it is, really, the means by which jazz comes to life.
so if jazz is to live ( which means growing and progressing) it must have
ears to hear it. The ears we particularly pay tribute to are the ones
who come to hear 'live' music. Music must have live audience contact to
survive. it is through this contact that the artist is stimulated to present
new ideas and thus jazz grows. so to the trained and eager-to-hear ear
that is our audience today we bow. Jazz Unlimited is unique in that it
is one of the few concerts to bring together a group of musicians whose
approach to the art has been similar. Each is creating new sounds not
because they wish to be different but because they are. With each artist
appearing in concert today a 1955 jazz poll winner, the program promises
to be exciting. All you have to do is lend them your ears.
