Lester Young

Prez, so strongly rooted in Black American Jazz history and his music was like the branches bending in the wind or a rock skipping over the water, floated sweetly over the sea like a sail boat...Young, when you say jazz... he is perfect...he could never hit wrong note, he was just making music, he plays not too much, not too little, not to funk, not too sweet. He just chose the black experience and maube what I would like to say is that he got above the anger and the frustration and he went above, into a different atmosphere.
When you heard him you didn't think about anything tachnical or the rhythms or tyhe beats, you just heard him floating on top of the surf, moving 'on the crest of the wave' style, which is not a style of forcing or making the beat.
Prez played with the original style of shifting, sliding, cool, no big show, sailing above it all.He was full of all the natural thing you can't read on music sheets. You heard something he could distill and get as the pure essence of something. Don't forget he is living a black life which is bottom, and then he is travelling with bands, he's not eating well, he's not sleeping well. O.K., he's smoking pot to calm his nerves. that's the calmer he used.
