Meditation
Tony Scott, feat. Jan Akkerman
Verve 835 070-2 CD (Germany) 1988
Liner Note by Cees Schrama.
Nobody knew what was going to happen on the
17th of June at the Soundpush Studios in Holland.
Jan Akkerman, ex ‘Focus’ nominated
best guitar player in the world and Tony Scott, clarinet pollwinner for
more than decade and globetrotter, first met on the night before and although
it became a lively evening due to the eloquence of both parties and the
‘high spirits’, no mention was made of the recording the morrow.
Since I was the originator of this totally improvised session I have to
admit I felt a bit uncomfortable.
I shouldn’t have worried. From the moment
those two headstrong musical magicians entered the dim lit studio an atmosphere
of high tension pervaded the air and as the tape started rolling and the
incense burned, great sounds started flowing from Jan, behind his double-barrelled
guitar and switch-board and Tony in his favourite Lotus position, dressed
in black, humming and playing.
Bass player Win Essed and drummer Bruno Castellucci
supplied a perfect smooth wall to wall carpet for the two genii to float
on.
Although Jan and Tony had never played together, they nodded, smiled,
looked at each other and wailed closely followed by Wim and Bruno.
The session proceeded without a hitch and while listening to the playback
some of us almost started to levitate.
I am happy to present you with the CD
version of Meditation 10 years after it’s initial analog release,
and long before “new Age” was coined.
These “sounds” withstand all times as is the case with good
music.
Thanks to Tony, Jan, Wim and Bruno, engineer Jan Scuurman and photographer
Rob Pauwels we had a great day.
Now you lay back and meditate or levitate whichever
you prefer.
Cees Schrama.
